Watercolor Workshop Swans on Water – A Study in Light, Form, and Reflection 8/10/2026 Supplies
In this 4‑hour watercolor workshop, students will complete a finished painting of one or two swans gliding across calm water beneath overhanging foliage. The project is designed for all skill levels and emphasizes controlled washes, soft transitions, and the development of clean, luminous surfaces.
We begin with a very simple, light pencil sketch—just enough to place the major shapes and guide the painting. Drawing handouts will be available for anyone who would like a ready reference.
Students will build the painting through the application of transparent washes, beginning with a graded wet‑into‑wet wash that creates smooth value transitions and the initial soft reflections beneath the swans. Negative painting will be used to establish the primary swan shapes, followed by controlled edge softening with a damp brush to refine their forms and define the curvature of the necks. Lifting techniques will restore highlights on the backs, wings, and facial planes to emphasize the direction of light. Layering and glazing will deepen the foliage, reinforce cast shadows, and refine the mirrored shapes in the water, and final touches will be applied with selective drybrush to articulate feather texture and subtle ripples across the surface.
