Born in 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, I grew up in the city but spent summers at our family residences in Smithtown and Peakville, New York. It was during these seasonal escapes that I discovered the world of the natural landscape, and it has been the inspiration for my art ever since. In 1975, I received my MFA in painting from Pratt Institute and began exhibiting my paintings at Razor Gallery in SoHo, NYC. From the early '80s to the 1990s, my artwork was displayed by Soghor, Leonard, and Associates, known as the "OK Harris Annex" on Broome Street in lower Manhattan. Simultaneously, I exhibited at the Jean Lumbard Gallery on 57th Street in Manhattan and the Clark Whitney Gallery in Lennox, Massachusetts. In addition, my paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions across the United States. My awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Painting Fellowship, a New York State CAPS fellowship in painting, a grant from the Hillwood Art Museum, Long Island University, C.W. Post College, and numerous awards from juried art exhibitions. Recent distinctions include "Best in Show" at the Setauket Artists 39th Annual Exhibition in 2019, "Best in Show" at the Setauket Artists Deepwells Exhibition in 2023, and the "1st Place Award" at The Atelier’s 3rd Annual Invitational Exhibition in 2021 at Atelier Hall, St. James, NY.
From 1990 through 2020, I served as a full-time faculty member at St. John’s University, teaching in the Department of Art and Design and holding the position of department chairperson from 2010 to 2013. I retired from St. John’s University in 2020 as an Associate Professor. |
